What do you name your tech after?

Out of curiosity, what do you name your tech after? Most devices allow you to set a name, so what do you use?

I use mythological figures. I try to find a suitable name based on that figure’s role or properties. For example, my wireless router is named Aether. My iPod is named Apollo (Greek god of music)I have a set of three USB thumbdrives, identical except for their capacities. They’re named Sol, Terra, and Luna, in order of size. A smaller one is Nyx. My external harddrives are Pegasus and Sleipnir.

I can’t be the only person to follow a particular theme in device naming.

  1. I used to have themes for names, but nowadays I usually just choose a name that means something to me. My Linux server is “pbuntu” as it’s an old Powerbook, my MacBook is “P2 MacBook” (which is an inside joke, sort of) my iPod is just “Pete Prodoehl’s iPod” which is boring, and my home machine is “gbox” which gets re-used for each main home computer I have due to me also using that for the DNS name.

  2. Random. My photoSD card is Atlas. External HD is VanHoser. iPod nano is Inertia. Xerxes is the name of my iPod shuffle, which no longer works. Interestingly enough, my bowling ball is named Anne, but that’s a whole’nother story.
