So it’s going to be 2011 very shortly. A new year, and according to every tradition we have, a new start. Fresh slate. Tabula rasa. We’re supposed to set resolutions for ourselves of things we want to do in the new year.
I’ve never put much stock in the idea of resolutions, given that they tend to generally be convenient as punchlines for jokes and are almost never followed through on. However, I feel obligated to at least list a few publicly so that I can refer back to them and, if necessary, be called out for failing to at least try to achieve them.
So here goes.
- Spend more time at the gym. Since my cost-per-hour of gym time in 2010 very nearly produces a DIV/0 error, this should be pretty easy to accomplish. I’ll set an attainable goal of going at least once per week.
- Read more books. I read more books in 2010 than in previous years, but I’d still like to increase that number significantly. Sub-goal: increase the diversity of said reading material to include more than just sci-fi novels.
- Watch fewer movies/TV shows. I spent entirely too much time staring at a television screen this year. I intend to spend more time reading than watching.
- Increase social time, decrease computer time. Simply put: get off the computer and out of the house. Be around people more.
- Speak less, say more. My signal-to-noise ratio hasn’t been ideal lately. This needs to change. I need to focus more on quality of interactions than quantity.
Are there any glaring omissions from this? I’m trying to keep the list reasonable, and deliberately a little vague, but hopefully this isn’t all that impossible to accomplish. Hold me to it, internet.

Good stuff, Tom. Realistic, too… I’d like to follow your lead to get off the computer and get out more. Or just get off the computer and read… from a book. Thanks for sharing, and best wishes in the new year!
