Will “mobile” stop being a separate concept in ten years? Probably.
In response to a question about if we’ll be talking “Mobile” in 10 years, Michael believes that the term goes away and it just becomes a core piece of marketing.
Except, I don’t think it’ll be ten whole years. I think it’ll be a lot sooner. Mobile smartphone sales and internet usage have been skyrocketing, to the point where within a few years you’ll be considered something of a Luddite if you don’t own a smartphone with a high-speed data connection.
We’re already seeing the rise of mobile banking, which has thus far been a bit of a hold-out since many people are still afraid that somehow it’s less secure than using the bank’s site from your desktop computer. As people get more and more comfortable using their wireless data connection for commerce, the mental difference between the “mobile internet” and just “the internet” is going to fade a lot faster than we think.
Will it take ten years before that happens? I doubt it. Five years? Probably.
