How Do Marketing Professionals Use Twitter?

With the rise of Twitter and Facebook and YouTube and the myriad other social media platforms we know and love today, companies are finally starting to realize they can use these channels to market their brand. I’m seeing more job openings for “social media experts” and “social marketers” than ever before. These people are ostensibly hired to “manage” the brand’s presence on these social networks to “connect” with customers.

(I put these terms in quotes because too often it ends up as just another advertising channel rather than an actual social experience. Too many companies use Twitter to talk at people rather than with them.)

So, as I wondered on Twitter today, how many “social media marketing professionals” use these social networks personally, outside of their corporate roles?

With that in mind, I present an informal poll. If your work role has you managing a social media presence, do you use sites like Twitter personally as well? Or do you punch out at the end of your workday and not give another thought to it until you clock in the next day?
